Advanced Learning

Let me introduce myself. I am Nancy Stevenson, the math instructor for the advanced learners at Hayden Meadows. The program is designed to meet the needs of the students in the third, fourth and fifth grades that demonstrate a solid understanding of math concepts based on pretests, class participation, and standardized tests. Students participating in this program work hard in school and achieve at a high academic level. During advanced math, students are encouraged to have positive attitudes for learning. That means:

  • being creative by using a variety of strategies to solve problems
  • being respectful by listening to one’s classmates
  • being curious by asking questions to clarify one’s understanding
  • being confident by explaining how a problem was solved

My goal this year is to challenge students through problem solving that reinforce the concepts learned in the homeroom. Watching students learn new concepts and apply their learning in new situations gives me great joy.

Advanced reading is serviced by grade level teams or in the homeroom through differentiated instruction (making accommodations needed for the level of the learner). Teachers collaborate regularly to analyze the needs of students and group the students based on those needs.

Please feel free to contact me. Communication is an important cornerstone in a child’s education.
